History of the Feel the Rhythm of the Drums Festival

A historical view of the Festival

This festival has a rich history and amazing story we would love to share. This is our story.

The Feel the Rhythm of the Drums Festival was born out of a deep passion for culture, unity, and rhythm. Founded by Orlando Primo, a master drummer, cultural ambassador, and founder of Majekfingers Drumming School, the festival began as a small community gathering designed to bring people together through the universal language of drumming. Over the years, it has evolved into one of the most anticipated cultural celebrations in the region — a vibrant showcase of music, dance, art, and togetherness.

The first Feel the Rhythm of the Drums Festival was held in 2010, marking the anniversary of Majekfingers Drumming School. What started as a humble celebration of drumming students and local artists quickly captured the hearts of audiences, attracting drummers, dancers, and cultural enthusiasts from all walks of life. Each year, the festival grew in size and vision, transforming into a platform that honors the diverse rhythms of the African diaspora while fostering cross-cultural exchange and collaboration.

The festival’s mission has always been rooted in unity through rhythm — celebrating the shared heartbeat that connects humanity across borders, traditions, and generations. Through live performances, interactive drumming and dance workshops, art exhibitions, and community storytelling, the event has become a living classroom of cultural education and artistic expression. It continues to highlight the importance of preserving traditional rhythms while embracing modern creativity.

Over the past 15 years, Feel the Rhythm of the Drums has featured performers and groups from across the Caribbean, Africa, and the Americas. From the thunderous beats of West African djembe ensembles to the vibrant movements of Brazilian samba and the soulful pulse of Caribbean drums, the festival has offered a unique experience that transcends language and geography.

Hosted in iconic cultural spaces such as Music Box Village in New Orleans, the festival serves not only as a stage for artists but also as a bridge connecting communities. It provides opportunities for children and adults to learn about drumming traditions, experience the healing power of rhythm, and celebrate the beauty of cultural diversity.

Today,Feel the Rhythm of the Drums Festival stands as a testament to Orlando Primo’s lifelong commitment to culture, education, and humanitarian work. It continues to inspire new generations of drummers, dancers, and cultural lovers — reminding the world that when the drums speak, they carry stories of strength, unity, and hope.

The festival’s legacy grows stronger each year, amplifying the rhythms that echo from Guyana to New Orleans and beyond — a celebration of history, heritage, and the timeless beat that connects us all.
